A Midsummer Night's Dream [Act II Review]

Name: ________________________________ A Midsummer Night’s Dream Act II Scene I and II *We find out from Puck and another fairy that Oberon, the King of fairies and Titania, Queen of faeries are fighting over an Indian boy. *Titania accuses Oberon of being very fond Hippolyta. Oberon accuses Titania of being very fond of Theseus. The fairies have come to Athens to marry off Theseus and Hippolyta. *Oberon and Titania’s quarrel has had many negative effects on nature, the seasons and humans such as: 1. Contagious Fogs 2. Crops Rotting 3. Disease *Titania will not give up the child because she was friends with the mother who died in childbirth. She feels obligated to raise the boy herself. *Oberon sends Puck to find a pansy, otherwise known as love-in-idleness. The flower has Cupid’s love potion in it. He plans to anoint Titania’s eyes with this potion so that she will fall in love with a hideous creature and he will be able to take the Indian boy. *Helena tells Demetrius, “Your wrongs do set a scandal on my sex. We can not fight for love; as men do; We should be woo’d, and we’re not made to woo.” *Hermia and Lysander sleep apart from one another because Hermia says they should act like a virtuous maid and bachelor. *Puck thinks Lysander is Demetrius because of his Athenian wear/garment, and because Lysander is sleeping far away from Hermia. Puck mistakenly thinks Lysander is Demetrius and puts the potion on Lysander’s eyes instead. *Lysander wakes and the first person he sees is Helena, whom he falls deeply in love with. She thinks Lysander is mocking her.
